1-8 Preparing to Measure
Care must be taken when measuring distance on a military map. A small error
on the map can result in a significant error on the ground. Reaching your objective
on the ground will depend primarily on your ability to accurately measure distance
on a map.
Re-check your work. If possible, have another qualified person check your work.
Take your time. Position yourself directly over the top of the map.
Do not trust your memory. Record your measurement as soon as it is taken.
Use only one (1) side of a piece of paper for each measurement.
Erase "tick marks" made on the map as soon as they have served their purpose.
Keep the sharpest point possible on your pencil.
Use the most accurate measuring devices available, such as the bar scale at
the bottom of your map.
Put the map on a flat surface and remove all the wrinkles.
Isolate yourself to avoid being disturbed.
